Unexpected Ways to Clean with Hair Spray: Finding alternative uses for items you already have in the house can help you save time, money, and effort on your cleaning routine. Chances are, if you use hair styling products, you already have a can of natural hair spray in your bathroom. Here are some surprising ways to clean with natural hair spray:
Prevent dust buildup on curtains. Lightly spray window curtains with hair spray to repel dirt and dust.
Kill bug and insect home invaders. Spray directly on bugs and insects like houseflies, spiders, ants, and more to kill them instantly and stop them from infesting your home.
Remove sticky labels with ease. Hair spray helps dissolve the adhesive on labels and stickers. Spray the label liberally with hair spray. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, and wipe clean.
Preserve the shine on shoes after polishing. Give leather shoes a light spray with hair spray after polishing to help the shine last longer.
Use mayonnaise to make artificial plants shine. Faux plants are a wonderful, low-maintenance way to brighten up a room, but dust can make them appear dull and dingy. Put a dab of mayo on a cloth, and wipe leaves to make them shine like new again.
Make a natural air freshener with vodka and essential oils. Commercial air fresheners contain toxic fragrances that can act as hormone disrupters, cause asthma in healthy individuals, and maybe even cause cancer! To make your own natural, safe, and effective room spray, mix 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of vodka, and 10–15 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) in a spray bottle, and shake to combine. Spray to freshen air and fabrics in your home without the health risks! (This spray works great on smelly shoes too.)
Use salt to clean faux flowers. Put the flowers in a 1-gallon plastic storage bag, and add 3/4 cup of salt. Shake the bag, and watch the salt get all brown and dingy!
Remove dirt and smudges from photos and paintings with a slice of bread. Gently rub a slice of bread on photos and paintings to wipe away dirt and smudges without harming the pictures.
Clean vent covers effortlessly in the dishwasher. The little slats in vent covers can be really difficult to get clean. Pop them in the dishwasher, and let it do all the work for you. First, rinse the vent cover in a sink or bucket of soapy water, using a bottle brush to remove as much dirt and debris as possible. Put the vent cover in the dishwasher, and wash on the short cycle with water and no detergent. Let the cover air-dry before placing back on the vent.
Dust air vents with a cloth and a butter knife. Wrap a damp cleaning cloth around a butter knife to clean between the thin slats in your air vents. For tough dirt, spray the vent with all-purpose cleaner first, then wipe clean.
Assemble your own DIY plug-in refill. Those plug-in air fresheners contain toxic ingredients too. Make your own homemade plug-in refill with this easy recipe to keep your family safe. Use a pair of pliers to gently pull the wick away from the plug-in container. Rinse the container thoroughly to remove the old chemical fragrance. Fill the container 1/3 to 1/2 full with your favorite essential oil, then fill the rest of the way with water. Replace the wick, and push firmly until you hear it click into place. Shake well, and plug into an outlet to distribute the clean, natural fragrance.
Pull the vacuum cleaner backward slowly for maximum effectiveness. Many people don’t realize that pushing the vacuum forward just directs it where to go. The vacuum is really only cleaning when you pull it backward. To help your vacuum perform even better, pull it back slowly so that it has more time to catch all the dirt.
Remove mystery carpet stains with hydrogen peroxide. Don’t know what the stain is, but still want it clean? Mix 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with a little non-gel, plain white toothpaste or a sprinkle of cream of tartar. Work the paste into the stain with a cloth or sponge, then rinse with clean, cool water. This method even works on stubborn bloodstains!
Save money on floor cleaner with highly concentrated Sal Suds. Just 1-1/2 teaspoons of Sal Suds per 1 gallon of water is all you need to make bare floors sparkling clean. This solution is safe and effective on all bare floors, even wood! Dip a clean mop in the mixture, and wring it until damp. Mop the floor, and follow up with a dry cloth or air-dry.
Clean area rugs with a garden hose. Wool, cotton, and jute rugs will need to be spot-cleaned like indoor carpets, but rugs made of synthetic fibers like nylon and rayon are a bit more forgiving. Of course, you should follow the manufacturer’s care instructions if they’re available, and do a spot test on the fabric for colorfastness before cleaning the entire rug. If your synthetic area rug needs some serious cleaning, vacuum it, then take it outside, and spray it with the garden hose! A sloped driveway works best for this because you won’t have to lay the rug on the dirty grass. Spray the rug with the hose until it’s completely wet. Squirt a couple drops of dish soap or Sal Suds, and use a scrub brush to work the soap into the fibers. Don’t scrub too vigorously or you may cause damage. Rinse the rug thoroughly with the hose until the suds are completely gone, then leave it outside to dry.
Scrub away deep stains with a toothbrush. Apply a stain remover, such as white vinegar, plain (unflavored) club soda, or vodka, and work it into deep stains with a soft bristled toothbrush. Blot to lift the stain.
