Raw Potatoes: How to use it for cleaning purposes

Even cast iron pans that have been seasoned and cleaned carefully will develop a little rust once in a while. My favorite way to tackle rust on cast iron skillets, knives, and other cooking tools? With a raw potato.

Remove rust from your cast iron cookware, baking pans, knives or other tools – Cut a russet or red potato either across in half or lengthwise, or just enough to where you can comfortably grip it. Dip the cut end in salt or baking soda and scrub the rusted area. If it gets slippery, thinly cut off the already used surface of the raw potato and repeat the same thing until the rust is gone. Then rinse and dry off.

How in the world does this work? Potatoes contain oxalic acid, which helps to break down the rust. Also, potatoes are magical. This potato trick is so handy (and non-toxic!) and it isn’t limited to cast iron — you can use it to remove rust from baking pans, knives, and other household tools.
