How to take care of your Dining Room

How to take care of your Dining Room: The centerpiece of any dining room is the table, and these come in a bewildering array of sizes, types and materials. They can also be INCREDIBLY expensive to buy and repair.

Taking care of your Dining Table

Firstly, avoid the use of harsh chemicals and abrasives for ALL types of table as this may ruin the finish. Always check with your table manufacturer regarding maintenance before you clean anything! There! You’ve been warned!

Keep ALL water far away from your table; this will ruin the varnish very quickly, so use placemats, coasters and tablecloth to protect it. You can always remove these after dinner to show off the table.

Apply an eco-friendly wood conditioner to a soft clean cloth and thoroughly wipe down the table. Do this every six months or so to maintain its luster.

How to Clean Spills

Clean up spills immediately after they happen. Use a damp clean cloth to remove anything that may cause a sticky residue and then go over again with a dry soft cloth to take up any moisture.

How to Hide Scratches

Use a nut like walnut with a similar color to the table wood to fill in scratches. Rub the nut kernel horizontally across the scratch. Then use iodine on a cotton bud to darken it. Bear in mind that it may take several coats of iodine to get the colors to match.

How to Clean Off Watermarks

Rub a little mayonnaise onto a watermark and leave it overnight. In the morning, wipe away any excess and apply more if needed.

How to Remove Pledge Smudges

Murphy’s Oil Soap is a liquid cleaner specifically for wood. It does an excellent job of cleaning tables and it can cut though with ease waxy deposits caused by such products as Pledge.

How to Clean a Glass-Topped Table

For a quick clean, using a lint-free cloth and a bucket of warm soapy water, simply wash both sides of the glass and then wipe again with a clean damp cloth.

If your top is wooden-framed, use a cleaner that is safe for both, such as multi-surface sprays or wipes.

For a more thorough clean, fill a spray bottle with one cup of water, one cup of rubbing alcohol and one tablespoon of white-vinegar. Apply the solution to the top and then wipe away with a lint-free cloth.

For really tough dirt, use the ‘Bar Keepers Friend’, which is a mildly abrasive cleaner made for glass and other hard surfaces.

To clean glass clouded by mineral buildup, spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the tabletop then leave for two hours. Wipe it off, and then wash the surface over with soapy water.
