How to Clean Rugs and Carpets

If you home has started to feel dingy, then it could be that your rugs and carpets are in need of a good clean. This is because when left uncared for over time, they can easily become magnets for stains and their brightness can soon begin to diminish. They may even begin to give off an unpleasant odor, which I’m sure is something you don’t want when you have visitors around. That means it’s time to revitalize them and even though deep-cleaning should be left to the pros, there’s still lots you can do to return them to their previous glory. In doing this, you will ultimately return warmth, patterns and textures to your home once more.

Basic Cleaning

Once a week, place your rugs face down on an old clean sheet, vacuum thoroughly, and then flip over and do the other side. If you have an upright vacuum, be sure to switch the beaterbar to its lowest setting.

How to Remove Stains

For dirty spots, lightly blot the area several times with a clean, damp sponge or cloth, while periodically patting dry with a towel to absorb the moisture. Remember to never scrub at rugs or you’ll damage them!

How to Removing Spills

If milk is spilled on your rug, rinse the area thoroughly with mild detergent and water. Once cleaned, blot away any dampness with a clean towel.

For red wine spills, grab a cloth, dab it in equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and liquid dishwasher soap, and then blot away. When finished, take a clean cloth and blot the damp patch until dry.

To speed the process, carefully brush up any wet patches with a soft, clean carpet brush to raise the pile and expose the fibers to the air. This dries them and lifts the remaining dirt.

How to Deodorize Your Carpets

Make your own carpet fresher by adding a few drops of potpourri oil to a small box of baking soda. Simply sprinkle on this mixture, leave for 10 – 20 minutes and then vacuum away. This is also great for neutralizing smells from – ahem – pet “accidents”.

How to Remove Stains from Carpets

To help remove carpet stains, mix white vinegar and baking soda together to form a paste and work it into the area with a clean nylon fiber brush (an old toothbrush will do). Leave it to dry, and then vacuum up. Repeat as necessary. To kill any smells, just add some lemon or orange juice to the mix. Remember to try this on a small test patch first to make sure it won’t damage your carpet.
