Yet again, as always, follow the manufacturer’s guides before cleaning. You don’t want to ruin that games console now, do you!
Each week, vacuum out the dust from the ventilation grilles of all your electronic gear, and then once done, give their casings a thorough wipe over with a damp – almost dry – cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners as these will almost certainly damage the finish.
For stubborn grime, just add a tiny drop of diluted dishwashing soap to the cloth and scrub lightly over the area. Make sure the cloth is not too wet and, where possible, always unplug the item before wiping. Remember – water and electricity can kill!
Remote controls are a breeding ground for germs, so clean them daily. A good wipe with a damp cloth should do, but if a dirty crust has formed, clean between the buttons with a cotton bud and a mild solution of liquid dish soap.
Dust loves computer and TV screens, so gently wipe a dry micro-fiber cloth over them daily. Then wipe over a fabric softener sheet to reduce the static.
For a more thorough cleaning, do ONLY the following:
Spray-on distilled water and wipe dry with a micro-fiber cloth. Alternatively, use a soft lintfree cloth and spray the screen in a solution of distilled water and no more than 50 percent rubbing alcohol (the posh name is isopropyl).
Do not use chemi cals or acids of any kind! That includes white vinegar solutions – despite what some people say! These substances will damage the special coating on LCD and plasma screens by turning them yellow.
Computer keyboards are germ factories, so wipe-over daily and clean them properly once a month by doing the following:
Firstly, disconnect your keyboard, and then holding upside-down over a wastebasket, tap firmly on the back to shake out any dust, crumbs or boogers (yuck!) from between the keys. Be careful not to do this too hard or the keys may ping out of their sockets!
Next, tip it lengthways on its side and then blast between the keys with a can of compressed air, if you have one. To achieve the best results, spray in a crisscrossed motion.
Finally, take a soft lint-free cloth, moisten it in rubbing alcohol and then wipe between the keys and the rest and the casing. Don’t forget to clean the back as well. This will kill any nasty bacteria and clean off sticky grime.
When finished, plug it back in.
Like keyboards, mice are bug-farms too, so they also need regular cleaning. Disconnect the mouse and wipe over with a rubbing alcohol dampened cloth. Be careful not to pull off any rubberized feet on the bottom and avoid the optical sensor, too (the little red-light or lens-thingy on the underside). When done, plug back in and point away!
