Effective Ways to Care for Carpets: Use these tricks to nix stains and odors in no time, and breathe new life into your carpets!

Freshen with this natural and affordable homemade carpet powder. Add 20–30 drops of your favorite essential oil to a 16-ounce box of baking soda. Put the flap down on the box, and shake well. Use immediately, or let the mixture sit for 6–8 hours to allow the essential oil fragrance to absorb into the baking soda. Sprinkle generously on smelly carpets. Let it sit for 20 minutes or overnight for tough odors, then vacuum it up. Store the powder in a cool, dry place, and use it on any surface that needs freshening.

Use vinegar and laundry detergent to clean spilled paint. Work quickly to clean the paint before it dries. Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent, and 2 cups of water. Sponge the solution onto the stain, and blot to remove.

Remove ink stains with milk and cornstarch. Mix 2 parts milk with 3 parts cornstarch to form a paste, and apply it to the ink stain. Let it sit for a few hours to dry, then vacuum it up. (Cornstarch also works great on oil and grease stains.)

Clean pet stains and odors with vinegar and baking soda. Blot away as much of the mess as you can with paper towels. Mix a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar, and pour it on the stain. Scrub to work the mixture into the carpet. For really smelly messes, use straight vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda onto the carpet to cover the stain, and scrub to work it into the fibers. Add a little of the vinegar mixture to dampen, and continue to work the paste into the carpet. Let it sit for a day or overnight until the baking soda is dry, then vacuum up.

Iron carpets to remove stains. Mix a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the stain liberally with the mixture, and cover with a terry cloth. Iron the terry cloth, and watch as the stain lifts onto the cloth with ease.

Nix carpet stains with vodka. Blot the stain to remove most of the mess, then pour any clear alcohol, such as vodka, rubbing alcohol, or even white wine, onto the stain. Continue blotting until the stain lifts away.

Remove nail polish from carpets with vodka. Let the nail polish dry, then chip as much off as you can with a knife. Put some vodka on a cloth, and blot the stain until it dissolves away.
